Hooray Little Miss!!!

This lovely little lady rolled over for the first time by herself today. The above photo was taken moments after the big event. Congratulations!!!
It is hard to believe that she is just shy of 5 months already. What's worse is that little man is getting ready to celebrate his 2nd birthday. Everyone tells you how fast it goes by but I don't think a person can fully understand that simple statement until they are actually watching it go whizzing by. In honor of the upcoming birthday celebration I have been trying to order a simple 1/2 sheet cake with a dog on it. I know, how complex can I get? Silly me, I thought it would be an easy thing to do. Ha ha. I started making my calls last Friday before I went to work.
"Well, we have Scooby Doo and Blue's Clues..."
"He doesn't know who those dogs are, do you have a simple run-of-the-mill dog you can put on it?"
"We have Blue's Clues."
"Thanks."
Store number two, same thing. I have seen pictures of my own birthday cakes from years past and one of them was in the shape of Winnie the Pooh with the appropriate colored frosting.... I know these cakes can be made. I had an easier time ordering my wedding cake. By this morning I am rather frustrated and go to order just a plain jane cake with a "Happy Birthday" on it.
"Well what else do you want on it?"
"I was going to try to put a dog on it since he has a thing for 'doggies' but I haven't had much luck with that."
"Oh, I can do that."
Halleluiah! Why didn't you pick up the phone the first time I called the store when I was told to come in and look at the book that has "Scooby Doo..." Of course the person that I then got to give my information to was rather questionable (didn't know how to spell 'dog') so I may get to be surprised when I go to pick it up on Wednesday. At least I will have time to make back-up cupcakes or something. You may be asking yourself why she doesn't just make one herself... The answer is that I am working the morning of Thanksgiving and we are celebrating when I get home from work... want it fresh...preferably a surprise... I'll have to let you know how it turns out because I know you will be worrying about it along with me :P
In knitting news, I got a wild hair to finish up the pair of Koigu mittens that I started when I was still pregnant with little miss. It had been a while. I have the top to decrease and then finish up the thumb and voila! Finished pair of mittens. Soon. As I started the second mitten the thought occurred to me that I must have been under a little stress there at the end while waiting for little miss to make her debut as the gauge on the first mitten is ridiculous. Granted it is 2 strands of Koigu on size 4 (I think) needles, but still. I used a size 9 needle for the double stranded Koigu hat to go with the mittens. Then I will finish the hoodie. I don't dare knit anything else until the mitten is done otherwise I will never be able to match this gauge again. I am hoping to finish the hoodie by Thanksgiving which, is totally possible for people knitting in the real world, but in my reality I am looking forward to some late nights if I am to get it done.
I was at work on Saturday and ran into a friend of mine that I hadn't seen in a while and since he is a computer guy I mentioned how my blog template taunted me as I tried to figure out how everything worked. He was rather surprised that I was blogging, let alone blogging about knitting. He surprised me though when he told me that they taught knitting when he was in school. (in Kenya). Evidently whenever he would lay his knitting down he would purl instead of knit so his garments looked "interesting". Knit and purl were two words that I never thought to hear come out of his mouth but there he was discussing knitting as though it was the most natural thing in the world and that we talked about it all the time. Just goes to show, you never know. I don't know if I was more surprised to hear that he used to knit or that they taught it in school. I had never heard of knitting as an academic subject before. I may have to look into this a little more. Must go though, naptime and all.

She was just waiting to be able to MOVE and go places and travel and all sorts, wasn't she? You can just see her thinking, 'Hey, this could lead to FUN things...'

Hope the birthday boy has a great day.

Wow ... I haven't had a moment to drop by your blog in a couple of weeks and somehow Little Miss seems to be a whole new baby! She just gets cuter and cuter every time I see pics.

Love the story about your knitting friend :)

Hope all is going wonderfully for you and yours.
