Back to Normal

I don't remember an Olympics, Winter or Summer, where I've enjoyed myself more. And now they're over. What is it about big events like this (the same with Holidays) where you are completely excited and in the moment during all the hoopla and before you know it they're all finished and you're back to your normal daily activities, all the while wondering what the next big event will be.

The minions, hubby, and I thought it would be a good idea to mark the end of the 2010 Winter Olympics/Knitting Olympics with an event all our own.

The track.

The minions started off on a smaller slope.

But were soon eager for a larger adventure.

Well little man was anyway. Little miss was happier on the swings.

The hubby broke in the "big track" for us and I must admit, was having quite a bit of fun himself though you can't tell it by this photo. Honestly, what sort of face is this? I own this track? I'm about to smack face first into a wall of snow? At any rate, this was obviously not his first time down the slope.

Little man loved it. Though, is anyone really surprised by this?

Little miss ended up having a total of 2 runs, both ending up something like this.

I'm not really sure why though, she did have a smile on her face as she went down the hill, she didn't have to walk up the hill once,

and there was a free mitten service.

After a while, the minions decided to venture down to the frozen lake and had lots of fun inspecting the snow and ice.

And walking on top of the lake.

Little man was telling me all about the icicles and I managed to catch a few odd faces. You can see them on my Flickr page.

Yes yes, that's all fine and good, but what about the Knitting Olympics? Here's a little mosaic of the completed projects for you.

There's little man's Valentine's Day socks all finished up, the OFFICIAL stranded mittens for little man (technically there is a stranded portion, so there!), the unfinished and still-to-be-frogged herringbone mitten, the Voodoo Priestess Headwrap/Scarf that I finished up during the Olympics (it is a pattern I wrote up for Gherkin's Bucket's Southern Charms Club), the frogged Glitten, my super-cool stranded hat, the minions' stranded hats, and the finished Valentine's Mittens for little miss. Not a bad haul for 2 weeks.

So, I am awarding myself the Knitting Champion Award.

Perhaps the ice fishermen are competing in an Olympics all their own!

That's what the end of my February looked like. I'm looking forward to what March has in store for the Dreams in Fiber household and rest assured, there are more projects/WiP's in the works!

Nearing the Finish Line

We're heading into the last days of the Olympics so I thought I'd post a little progress report. I made it a bit farther with the Original Stranded Mitten. Here it is.

Yes, it is indeed bound off and will remain a glorified swatch, or wristie if I choose to use it as such. It just wasn't fitting right and since I detest weaving in countless ends, I tried to carry the yarn up the side but it was got pulled too tight in spots... It just wasn't working for me. We'll leave it at that.

I wasn't overly upset about it, instead I moved on to new projects, like a stranded hat for me :)

When little miss was going through my stash to pick the colors for her hat I happened to notice these 3 yarn buddies sitting comfortably together in a bag (leftover from a past project) and decided that a hat was to be created. It fits me perfectly, has a nice little liner on the inside, and is super warm - trust me I know, I wore it shoveling and it was glorious!

Still, a hat is not a pair of stranded mittens... As I was lying there in bed it hit me. Why not use the leftover yarn to make a pair of Glittens! A woman from my Thursday Night Knitting Group has a pattern written up, I can use the orangish color for the cuff, thumb, and inner fingers and use the green and blue for the rest. It will be perfect! That was Saturday night. So Sunday rolls around and I'm all gung-ho to get started. I spend the better part of Sunday finishing up the mitten portion and and start in on the thumb. Way too big!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now I did try it on while knitting it up and it was a little wide, but I was okay with it. It was getting late and I was trying to hurry and finish up the mitten/thumb so I knit according to the pattern and I bound off without a final try-on-for-size. When I finally slid the mitten on I could fit 3 of my thumbs in the thumb section and I had a good inch and a half (which translates to 2 inches after washing) at the top. Sorry for the craptastic photos, it was late and I was vexed.

But I had to document the fact that they were knit up... Of course it only takes 2 minutes to reduce a mitten to a pile of yarn barf :)

Now let me note, that my issues weren't with the pattern itself, just the operator's execution of it! There have been several pairs of Glittens made that fit their wearers perfectly!

So now what? Scrap the mitten idea entirely, give it one more go... I went onto Ravelry and searched around for worsted weight stranded mittens and landed on a pair of Herringbone Mittens. That pattern called for larger needles than I had used for the Glitten, but had a couple fewer sts and had fewer rounds. Why not use this pattern with the same size needles as the Glittens and things should fit. Right?

I CO for my new pair of stranded mittens on Monday, and finish them up aside from the thumb by Monday night. I DID try them on right before I started decreasing for the top. Just to make sure. The thumb would work better, it was nice (and a tad loose) on the sides which was perfect, and I was to the top of my little finger. This should work. Decreases were finished, the end was kitchenered, the moment of truth. Too small. (*&&*(^)^()*&(_*^%&*^()!!!!!!! My gauge must have tightened up in my excitement there at the top.

I think with some aggressive blocking it will fit but at the same time, I'm not crazy about the cuff. It's not as long as I would have liked (granted I could have made it longer but I was using the same yarn that I used for the Glitten so I just knit with what I had) and it's baggy around the wrist. Again, not super-satisfied with the mitten. Naturally I don't have a finished picture of that one, but here's little miss helping me work on it.

Yes, the minions wear their hats indoors and no, I do not keep my house cold enough to warrant wearing a hat at all times ;)

That was Monday. I was miffed with my lack of Olympics-worthy mittens so I haven't even CO for the second Herringbone Mitten. I'm just indifferent to them and have no desire to work on it at the moment. Instead, I picked up little man's second sock which had been set down and neglected during the stranding frenzy and am working on finishing that up. I might make the second mitten and give them away for charity. We'll see. I have a stranded Harry Potter inspired bag charted up - though I have to tweak it a bit. I thought of some modifications to it while I was lying awake at 2am last night - what, you don't think about knitting when you can't sleep? - so I'm excited to get working on that and I have another hat to knit up which involves some colorwork... And my other WiP's... It was rather productive night, I must say. I'm a bit sleepy this morning but I had some Holiday Knitting brainstorms, and some other projects worked out :)

Who am I kidding, all that will have to wait until I can conjure up a pair of mittens that I'm satisfied with before the Olympics have finished!

Wednesday

Evidently the fact that I have other Knitting Olympics Projects to finish in the near future has been completely missed by the minions. Little man has officially claimed ownership of the USA hat so naturally this had to follow shortly thereafter: "Mom, me need one of those hats with the bow too!" The pronouns need some work.

So, this was my Wednesday project.

She even got to pick out her own colors from the stash. Of course since I lost MY USA hat, I had to CO for a stranded hat for me... 'Cause I have nothing better to do ;) Not USA colors, but more on that later.

And of course little miss had to pose for pictures in her 'bow hat' just like little man did. How foolish of me to assume that one hat would be sufficient! Don't let this innocent face fool you though!

When she gets her game face going, it's on!

She'll let you have it too. Fierce!

I think the purse adds just the right touch, don't you?

Just Couldn't Help Myself

I know, I know. Stranded Mittens are my Knitting Olympics project but I just kept sitting there watching the games and oogling over the incredible headgear that the fans were sporting... What was I supposed to do?

In my defense, this USA hat only took an evening - maybe my time was good enough to make it past the qualifying round!

This is not the official USA hat for the Olympic team but I had the colors needed in my stash and in the amounts that would work for this hat. Very quick and satisfying and should have been mine... Little man spotted the abnormally large pom pom on top and that was the end of that. I haven't even had a chance to wash/block it out yet, he refuses to take it off!

In other news, I'm still plugging away at my other projects.... And little miss has wasted no time in breaking in her new mittens - and little man's fish hat, since it was unoccupied :)

Calling all Readers

The Winter Olympics are coming right up and I know several people participating some way in the Ravelympics (Seriously folks, if you knit or crochet or just like looking at patterns and have not signed up on Ravelry yet, DO SO NOW. Go on, I'll wait. All done? Good, glad to have you back...). I wasn't going to do anything special knit-wise for the Winter Olympics this year and instead, just sit back and enjoy, but.... then I got to thinking. I enjoy watching sports. I also enjoy getting all geared up for a big game or big tournament... Hell, I even had to knit my pair of Deadliest Socks while watching last year's Deadliest Catch Season on the Discovery Channel - which is coming up in the nearer-rather-than-later-future I think, very excited though I'm not sure what I'll make this year, anyhoo - And, I like to knit. I know right? Who knew? Then it hit me. Wasn't there some sort of Knitting Olympics back in 2006? By golly there sure was! AND there's another Knitting Olympics this year! I'm all in.

Of course this information then proceeds to send my feeble little brain into overdrive. What do I do? I'm freaking out. Which direction do I go, which project do I tackle? I can't CO until the 12th and it has to be something new. Since it's for the Olympics, it has to be something I want to make for me so the TNKG Scarf KAL is out - sorry guys, it'll get made eventually, promise! All the while, I'm fighting with myself about my outrageous pile of WiP's and those few projects that I have been meaning to make for so long now that I feel like Jacob Marley... Do you really want to start something new when you've got a list a mile long of things to work on? Yes. Yes I do. Why? That's just the Knitter's way. Or maybe it's just mine. Either way...

Still though, I don't have a plan and that bugs me. I'm big on plans. And lists. Sometimes making lists is in the plan. Okay, let's take a step back and think logically here for a moment shall we? I want to make myself a sweater, but do I have a suitable amount in the stash for a sweater at the moment? Probably not. Sweater's out. Moving on. Something stranded? Perhaps... Do I have the stash? Yup. Can I whittle down my list of TO DO - STRANDED PATTERNS? Possibly. I'll have to come back to this one. How about socks seeing how I've added another 2 pairs of holey socks to my pile in the last week. Sock yarn stash ready and willing? Oh boy! Pattern? Oodles to choose from. So, stranded pattern, socks. Then again, why not tackle my single sock pile and try to finish 3 or 4 socks which then translates to new pairs for me? Technically it's a WiP since the first sock was made prior to the start, but the second socks would be new... Thoughts? Blast it all, now I can't decide.

Okay. I'll put it out there for you. Since it has to be a challenge and I have Feb 12th through the 28th to complete it... Here are my options:

Stranded hat (I'm slower at the stranded thing)
Stranded mittens
2 new pairs of socks (4 socks total)
4 single socks to complete the pairs (4 socks total)

I'll even throw in a little poll for you guys! I'll tally the results at the end of the 10th which will then give me the 11th to get all my things in order for my CO on the 12th :)

Alright folks, have at it!

ETA: it occurred to me that those of you who do not happen to knit might want a visual as to what stranded knitting looks like. Think colorwork!

Stranded Mittens - 5 votes
4 Single Socks - 5 votes

Knitting Olympics Project: It's going to be a surprise since there was a tie for first place!
